Colon Hydrotherapy

What is Colon Hydrotherapy?

Colon Hydrotherapy is a method of colon cleansing using constant warm water lavage using a contained temperature and pressure controlled device administered by a trained technician. We house Akron’s finest colon hydrotherapy center. Colon Hydrotherapy at SNWC is provided in a quiet and relaxing environment. Your well being and safety is our highest priority. The Libbe device which is an “open system” is ergonomically designed for your comfort. It also provides temperature-controlled water, purified through a carbon charcoal filter and an ultraviolet light. An odorless vent system, flushing valve, and viewing tube allow for a more pleasant experience. This gentle process leaves you feeling clean without unpleasant after-effects.

How do I prepare for my first appointment?

You will be emailed the necessary forms to be completed prior to your session. This allows ample time to review and fill in the personal history and informed consent forms. We recommend you do not eat or chew gum at least 2 hours prior to your appointment. We recommend you arrive a few minutes early and allow yourself to relax before your session. Feel free to bring reading material. Your therapist will then review the forms with you and answer any additional questions. At this time, your therapist will fully explain the Libbe system and procedure before beginning your session.

What is a colon hydrotherapy session like?

After the process is explained to you, the colon hydrotherapist will leave the room to allow you privacy. You will disrobe from the waist down, recline on the system, and self-insert the slender, single-use, lubricated nozzle one to two inches into your rectum. A cotton sheet is provided to drape over you. Your dignity is always maintained. At this time you will push a button to signal the therapist to reenter the room to start the session. The session is a comfortable experience with soothing music and low lights to invite relaxation as a small amount of water is allowed to flow into your colon, gently stimulating the colon’s natural peristalsis to release softened waste. The release of the colon’s contents may be repeated several times. This process should encourage better colon function and elimination. The whole process lasts approximately one hour, including 30-40 minutes of actual colon cleansing.

How many colon hydrotherapy sessions do I need?

The number of sessions depends on the individual’s needs. Our licensed Colon Hydrotherapist will help you determine what is right for you. (Also see our sample recommended protocol below). Colon hydrotherapy is best used in combination with adequate fiber and fluid intake, as well as exercise. Today’s sophisticated technology promotes both the safety and sanitation of this popular cleansing practice.

What are the benefits of colon hydrotherapy?

Hydrocolontherapy or lavage, consisting of retrograde large bowel irrigation with warm water through a tube gently inserted into the rectum, also has a positive role in the treatment of Obstructed Defecation Syndrome and there is no risk of side effects.

Colon hydrotherapy is an effective means of cleansing the large bowel in cases undergoing colonoscopy. It is more effective than the use of either oral mannitol or magnesium sulfate as a means of cleansing the large intestines prior to colonoscopy.

Colonic irrigation is an effective alternative for the treatment of persistent fecal incontinence after Diabetic Gastroparesis and/or recurrent or onset constipation additional to unsuccessful or (partially) successful Diabetic Gastroparesis.

Transanal colonic irrigation is safe and can be introduced to most patients suffering from Neurogenic Bowel Dysfunction, one of the many impairments that result from spinal cord injury.

Are there any circumstances when colon hydrotherapy cannot be performed?

Yes, there are specific conditions when colon hydrotherapy is contraindicated. These include diseases such as active infections, active inflammation (diverticulitis, Crohn’s disease, colitis, ulcerative colitis) anal fissures and painful or bleeding haemorrhoids. In such cases treatment cannot be carried out until they are healed or in remission.

Some diseases such as congestive heart failure, severe uncontrolled hypertension, severe anaemia, liver cirrhosis or kidney disease are absolute contra-indications to colon hydrotherapy.

Treatments are also not performed during the first 20 weeks of pregnancy, and not at all during complicated pregnancies. Large bowel (colon) surgery or resections are also contraindications for colon hydrotherapy. Lastly, if you’ve had a colonoscopy in the last 90 days we cannot do the treatment until after that time has passed. However, we always take a full case history before performing a colon hydrotherapy session.

Pre-Colonoscopy Preparation

To find potential ulcers, colon polyps, tumors, and areas of inflammation or bleeding, a colonoscopy requires the colon to be clean and clear of waste and buildup. Unfortunately, many people report that the chemical laxative pre-cleanse is very unpleasant and sometimes painful. Some people experience: cramping, burning at the rectum area, and it can be highly inconvenient as it often requires keeping very close to a bathroom for as long as a full day. It even takes time away from work.

Fortunately, Colon Hydrotherapy may offer a drug-free alternative to the cleanse by using warm filtered water to flush the colon of waste. This allows for little to no cramping, no burning at the rectum, and allows you to go about your normal activities afterwards without having to take days off.

Colon Hydrotherapy Aftercare

  • Drink plenty of liquids (water, electrolytes, herbal teas).
  • Replace intestinal flora (friendly bacteria/acidophilus, bifidus).
  • Eat light/soft foods for the rest of the day (soups are ideal)
  • Avoid eating raw vegetables (salads) for the next 4-6 hours.
  • Cooked vegetables and fruits are fine, but chew thoroughly.
  • Reduce meat consumption for 1 day.
For our clients who are unable to do a series, it is suggested to do a minimum of 2 colonics back to back as clients report a more significant release. This is primarily because the colon is already partially hydrated and flushing out impacted fecal matter is easier when it has been softened.
It has been our experience that by the third session, most clients are able to see a difference in their health. Colon hydrotherapy is not a cure-all but rather an important adjunct which can be used to help the body rid itself of toxic material. Please note that we are not medical doctors. It is not our intention to diagnose, prescribe or claim to cure any ailment. All of our information is for educational purposes only.
